Indian Army raises its first Apache attack helicopter squadron near Pakistan front

  • The Indian Army’s Aviation Corps raised its first squadron of AH-64E Apache attack helicopters in Jodhpur.
  • The squadron, named 451 Aviation Squadron, was formally raised in the presence of Lt Gen A. K. Suri, Director General Army Aviation.

Acquisition and Deployment:

  • India and the US signed a contract for the acquisition of six Apaches for the Indian Army during US President Donald Trump’s visit to New Delhi in 2020.
  • The Army will receive the first batch of three Apaches in May and another three in July.
  • The helicopters will be deployed along the Pakistan border to enhance attack capability.

Features and Capabilities:

  • The AH-64E Apache is designed to replace the existing fleet of Mi-35 choppers for assault and anti-armour operations.
  • It is equipped with the latest communications, navigation, sensor, and weapon systems.
  • The helicopter has an improved Modernized Target Acquisition Designation System for day, night, and all-weather target information.
  • It has a Fire Control Radar for classifying air and ground targets and operating in the maritime environment.
  • The Apache can also be used for reconnaissance, security, peacekeeping operations, and attack operations.
