India-Mozambique-Tanzania Trilateral Exercise (IMT TRILAT) 2024

Date: 21-29 March 2024

Participants: Indian Navy warships INS Tir and INS Sujata, Mozambican Navy, Tanzanian Navy
Objective: Enhancing maritime security and cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region, fostering regional cooperation between India, Mozambique, and Tanzania

Phases:

Harbour Phase (21-24 March 2024):
- Conducted at ports of Zanzibar (Tanzania) and Maputo (Mozambique)
- Activities include damage control, firefighting, Visit Board Search and Seizure (VBSS) procedures, medical lectures, casualty evacuation, diving operations
- Indian Navy offering training to officer trainees from Mozambique and Tanzania
Sea Phase (24-27 March 2024):
- Practical aspects of countering asymmetric threats, VBSS procedures, boat handling, manoeuvres, and firing exercise
- Joint Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance

Culmination: Joint debrief scheduled at Nacala (Mozambique)

Significance:

Marks a growing strategic partnership between India, Mozambique, and Tanzania
Enhances capabilities in tackling shared maritime threats like piracy, terrorism, and illegal resource exploitation
Highlights India’s commitment to the “Security and Growth for All in the Region” (SAGAR) vision
Aims to ensure a stable and secure Indian Ocean by engaging with East African nations.
